Protecting your emotional health means maintaining a balance between personal and academic commitments, developing healthy coping strategies to stressful events, and seeking out support when you feel overwhelmed. The transition to an unfamiliar campus environment can be particularly difficult for some students, including leaving home, the need to develop new friendships, and the demands of maturing and assuming new responsibilities. These demands can be particularly accentuated in a highly competitive academic environment. Many UCI students leave high school where they compete with a small percentage of students, only to find that the pool has grown much larger in college.
Many students have found it helpful to seek out support to protect or strengthen their emotional health while in college. Support at UCI is available from several resources where experts in student development are available. All services are confidential, which means that your records will be private. This website section highlights some of these services.
